Public Accountability Wiki Edit

Hi! Now that I see what you're doing here, I wonder whether your scope contains ours? See our About page for what we're doing.

Also, do you have any advice or ideas for cooperation, assuming we don't merge? Thanks! --Jesdisciple (talk) 19:36, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Giki is about good-governance. The original statement of mission is to help citizens and government organizations to form a community around common purposes to make the world a better place. The original write-up should probably be revisited by the active community to describe what we are actually doing- guess we will get round to doing that.
Generally we try not to replicate wikipedia, we are not an encyclopedia of governance- we help to track people, projects, processes, events, visions, missions and even run referenda. We use the wiki to encourage communities, to bring about stakeholder dialog, to see alternative perspectives, to hi-light the absence of these, give a voice to those who are denied opportunity to be part of a dialog. We encourage learning from different locations across the world and empowering each other- a global citizenry rather than parochial attitudes. After all we are one world that is highly connected and the most important issues in our lives no longer remain independent.
The use of talk pages for discussing any of these are strongly encouraged. The idea is to make governance work. Generally we have followed inclusion of all stakeholders, openness to different ideas and approaches, responsibility to the community, respect to those who participate with these principles.
You are very welcome to be part of Giki and make it your own- The community decides what works, what does not. Looking forward to your active participation and building communities around issues you care about- wether they are local, regional or global.
Welcome again!

Alright, that sounds good. Although I do wonder how much involvement in governance per se will be required for a figure to have a profile here. For example, political pundits, special interest groups and even corporations are often involved in the direction of society, and I expect someone, even if not myself, to want an article for such an entity. This is certainly no reason to not try it here, but I would like to know beforehand what will work. --Jesdisciple (talk) 15:02, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Oh, also... Would you mind importing the six page histories we've generated? It would be much appreciated. --Jesdisciple (talk) 15:07, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Geographical categories Edit

Hi again. Chad and I have reached an impasse about whether/how to bother you, so I think the easiest way to resolve that is to just do it. Please see this discussion. Thanks. --Jesdisciple (talk) 23:32, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

You are doing great- I saw the Category:Rework/Geographical_units.
 • Suggest you document the naming convention at say Conventions:Categories? Choosing a different namespace does not burden the Giki user with such design issues.
 • Also would be nice if we can keep the structure and design related discussions in a forum. I will move these there soon.
 • You may want to just edit the original categories, moving from rework will be a huge task. It may be easier to mark for discussion wherever an issue may arise?
Will get your files imported when I get a continuous window of an hour or two on this else over the weekend.
The most important thing in design is to not turn users off. Most giki users are not wiki designers. They would rather deal with the issues of governance. They would also not have the patience to put things into a clear compartment because they may see different compartments. This leaves a huge challenge to keep the structure fluid, evolving and with multiplicity of perspectives. It is also important that these design dialogues must not burden the users.
Do not hesitate to leave a message with a link to anything you want me to look at.
--Anupam 03:21, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
 • I'll take a shot at documenting; the hardest thing for me when writing is to figure out precisely what my topic is and how to approach it.
 • I'll start helping with that if I get done in time.
 • Come to find out, categories can't be moved anyway, and category tags can't be copied from an article AFAIK... I'll look into it a bit more, though.
I'm surprised you suggested a technically non-existent namespace for the category conventions. I would suggest Project:Category_conventions or some such. But that part doesn't matter enough to wait, since we can move the article after it's written.
Re design: Yeah, I wish I could get a notification when someone adds to a category I'm watching. That would help a good bit. --Jesdisciple (talk) 13:39, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
As you probably know, Wikia's improved email notifications now include that. --- Robin Patterson (Talk to me) 11:49, March 2, 2011 (UTC)
The rework looks good! Some suggestions:
 • You may want to add the template category to each category page and create any /autopreload page
 • You may want to create templates for common category groupings and insert the template instead of the categories allowing easier maintenance. Consider for example a template for EU countries that has and . (hmmm. maybe that should be ?)
Suggesting a different namespace as Special:AllPages will not be cluttered by non governance dialogues. I think the main namespace should be restricted to the content, the category namespace to the organization.

--Anupam 07:37, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
 • I looked at the source for category and didn't understand what the subpage is for...?
 • I think I understand what you mean, but that seems like a poor example. As far as I know, things like that (e.g. "States" + "USA") are eliminated by Robin's system ("States of USA").
Namespaces which are unknown to MediaWiki are ignored; see [1]. Either way, Robin moved it to Government Wiki talk:Categories. --Jesdisciple (talk) 14:06, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
Please see Forum:Semantic_target? for issues about combining categories on a semantic wiki. --Anupam 03:52, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Constituencies Edit

Hi, I got myself in trouble. I was trying to clean up the wanted pages, and one type of page I thought I could reasonably create was Indian constituencies. I was wrong; I don't know the states or numbers. Although I can find the states online, the numbers elude me. The pages I created before realizing my mistake are:

I'll finish filling in the states; if you can point me to a source for the numbers, I'll add them as well. --Jesdisciple (talk) 16:23, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Some of the problems in these wanted pages may be because of the different spellings used for the constituency on the candidate page. Either the spelling on the Candidate Pages needs to be corrected or the Constituency Page needs to be renamed. I will have the team which dealt with this data look at it. Can you mark the pages you created by mistake for deletion? --Anupam 06:33, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Alright, done. Also, I've been thinking about how many pages I've marked for deletion. As that's such a large load, I wonder if you would like to grant me sysop privileges to clean it up? I do feel a bit awkward asking that, because I'm still quite new here. --Jesdisciple (talk) 14:59, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Email Edit

I'm not sure whether you're simply not reading your email inbox, but I'd like to know I'm not just being ignored. Please respond, by either medium. --Jesdisciple (talk) 03:46, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks very much for the response. And I apologize for the speed at which I get anxious about a lack of response; to be sure you're not by far the only one who has gone beyond it. --Jesdisciple (talk) 21:14, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

Lok Sabha Elections Edit

Hi Mr / Dr Saraph,

There is an email going around on the web saying that you and M. D. Nalapat discovered very serious errors in Electronic Voting Machine tallies. The "signature" at the bottom says "Devlem 14:57, 8 June 2009 (UTC)".

If you are the Anupam Saraph in this report, please contact me : avi at atdinc dot com.

I am a board member of American Civil Liberties Union - NJ and we have a somewhat similar issue going on with voting machines in New Jersey, USA.

If you are not, please let me know; so I can continue to serach for the correc Anupam Saraph.

Avinash Tilak

Hi Avinash,
Prof Nalapat and I did stumble onto disturbing spreadsheets. These have resulted in several questions.
We did see the page created by Devlem. It appears to be a very good summary of our findings and the questions raised as a consequence.
--Anupam 16:16, 9 June 2009 (UTC) and Madhav Nalapat

Hi Anupam - I cannot locate the page on participatory budgeting in Pune with the film clip inserts. I also did not get any notification about it being edited out. Whats happening. Sanskriti 01:33, March 12, 2010 (UTC)Sanskriti

Creating Multiple Pages Edit

I want to create a series of pages for the 76 election panels of Pune Municipal Corporation which are going to replace the existing electoral wards. Is there any way to generate these pages with a template?

Salilb 18:44, September 15, 2011 (UTC

Yes, creating a template for uniform information is a good idea.
If you are familiar with wiki templates just go ahead and create one and use it for each of the panel pages you create. Please add semantics (this wiki supports semantics) in the template.
If you are not familiar with templates, can you list out the information you want each panel page to have? Can you also describe the panel page format? Someone from the community will help you get the templates working.
Anupam 05:32, September 16, 2011 (UTC)
I'm not familiar with wiki templates, I'll need some time to learn and work on it. But as a general idea, the panel page is similar to that of the ward page example PMC Ward No 24. The population, reservation status, map and list of issues will change. --Salilb 10:33, September 26, 2011 (UTC)

Check the page germany. there is som stuff on that page that might be considered racist 04:28, November 15, 2014 (UTC)
