The Pune Municipal Corporation is responsible for Solid Waste Management in the city as per the BPMC Act (need reference to appropriate sections) and in accordance with various rules

The basic operations can be divided into

  • Primary Collection
  • Secondary Collection
    • Containers and Dumper Placers system
    • Compactor Buckets and Compactors system
  • Tertiary Transport to the garbage dumpsite at Uruli Devachi
    • Transfer Stations and Bulk Refuse Carriers (BRCs)
  • Uruli Devachi Dumpsite Management
  • Processing
  • Fleet Management
  • Street Sweeping
  • Hotel Waste Management
  • Bio-Medical Waste Management
  • Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF)

Like most Municipal Services decisions are made in an ad hoc manner. This is because the city does not have a comprehensive policy to address the solid waste issues.

One of the first steps in creating a clear plan of action is to define key performance indicators (KPI). Janwani is working with the PMC and citizen groups to try and come up with a set of KPI for SWM.
